Dear colleagues and friends, dear participants of the 1st WASAD/SFB Congress,

First of all, many thanks for your active participation in the 1 congress in Würzburg. With 240 participants from 26 countries our first meeting was undoubtedly a great success!

Our scientific programme treated all problems associated with stress-related and anxiety disorders, such as triggers, basic mechanisms including genetics, epigenetics, molecular biological and neurochemical ones, clinical and psychological issues and treatment options. Most importantly, as demonstrated by our poster presenters and our free communication sessions, there is a large number of young researchers, willing to contribute to this field of knowledge, which will attract broad attention in the years to come. From this point of view, we can safely conclude that our first Congress was an important scientific event.

I would particularly like to thank Kerry Ressler for his “Festschrift” at the Opening Session. Furthermore, we are grateful to all other keynote and symposia lecturers as well as those who presented posters and free communications. All these contributions showed that there is an ongoing interest to find answers in the field of stress-related and anxiety disorders. For example, we have found that there was particular interest in the translation of knowledge gained through basic experiments into clinical applications and therapies. The whole concept has been well received and will therefore also be of major importance for the scientific programme of our next Congress in 2019.

Although the economic situation to organize such congresses remains difficult, we are very satisfied with the result and look forward to 2019. Feedback revealed that most participants enjoyed the open and friendly atmosphere at the congress, the fruitful discussions after the lectures, at the guided poster tours and during breaks. As we all know, the development of friendships is an important factor in the building of new cooperations. We do everything to promote these new friendships and are very proud to welcome 60 new members in our still very young Association. Our members will be kept informed and receive the latest information about WASAD activities.

To continue our work, we also rely on the support of the Journal of Neural Transmission (JNT), which serves as the relevant body of our Association. Springer/Nature publishers treat our contributions to stress and stress-related topics with special attention. You are all invited to submit original articles, short communications and reviews!

The overall success of this first WASAD/SBF Congress is an obligation for us to continue our engagement in the exploration of both, basic mechanisms of stress-related and anxiety disorders and their translation into clinical research as well as the development of new therapeutic strategies. In this project to find new ideas, topics and scientific formats, we kindly ask for your help – so, please feel free to submit your proposals! Be assured that the Scientific Committee of our next Congress will appreciate your help and try to include as many of your ideas as possible.

Many thanks again for your active participation and kind Support!

Yours sincerely,

WASAD WORLD CONGRESS 2017

in conjunction with the Collaborative Research Centers SFB-TRR 58,
Fear, Anxiety, Anxiety Disorders

The WORLD ASSOCIATION FOR STRESS-RELATED AND ANXIETY DISORDERS, WASAD, is an independent non-profit organization founded in 2016 by leaders of clinical and translational science.

The reasons for this are:

Stress and disease sequelae related to stress and trauma as well as anxiety disorders represent an ever growing social problem and cause psychological distress affecting professional life, lifestyle and quality of life. These diseases are now one of the most common causes of work absences and thus have direct social consequences affecting not only affected persons but also the social environment.
